Rhode Island Women’s Drug & Alcohol Abuse Statistics
According to a report based on the combined 2010 and 2011 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health, Rhode Island ranked among the top ten states for past-month illicit drug use among women aged 18 to 25[1]. The report also found that Rhode Island had the highest rate of past-year marijuana use among women aged 26 and older. These statistics highlight the prevalence of substance abuse among women in Rhode Island, indicating the need for effective prevention and treatment programs.
The most commonly abused substances among women in Rhode Island include alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs[2]. A study conducted at the Rhode Island Hospital Emergency Department found that 44% of women reported binge drinking in the past month, while 33% reported using marijuana[3].
Prescription drug abuse is also a significant concern, with Rhode Island ranking among the top five states for non-medical use of prescription painkillers among women aged 18 to 25[1]. These substances can have severe physical and mental health consequences, including addiction, overdose, and increased risk of mental health disorders.
The consequences and impacts of substance abuse on women in Rhode Island are far-reaching and can include a range of negative outcomes[4]. Substance abuse can lead to physical health problems, such as liver disease, heart disease, and cancer, as well as mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety. Additionally, substance abuse can have social and economic consequences, such as job loss, financial instability, and strained relationships. Women who abuse substances may also face unique challenges, such as stigma, discrimination, and difficulty accessing appropriate care. Addressing the complex issues surrounding substance abuse among women in Rhode Island requires a comprehensive approach that takes into account the unique needs and experiences of this population.
