Oregon Women’s Drug & Alcohol Abuse Statistics
Substance abuse is a significant issue among women in Oregon, with recent data indicating a high prevalence of drug and alcohol use disorders[1]. According to the latest National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), Oregon has the worst drug addiction rate in the country[2]. The survey suggested that more than 17% of Oregonians needed but did not receive treatment for addiction in the past year[3]. Women make up about one-third of people with alcohol problems and slightly less than half of those who have problems with illicit drugs[4]. The data shows that women in Oregon are not immune to the effects of substance abuse, and addressing this issue is crucial for improving women’s health and well-being.
There are various leading causes of substance abuse among women in Oregon, including mental health issues, trauma, and social and economic factors[5]. Incarcerated women in Oregon were found to have high rates of mental illness and drug use, with 50% stating they needed physical healthcare while in jail[6].
Women are more likely than men to face multiple barriers to accessing substance abuse treatment and are less likely to seek treatment[4]. These barriers can include lack of childcare, transportation, and financial resources. Addressing these underlying issues can help prevent substance abuse and improve access to treatment for women in Oregon.
Despite the barriers to treatment, there are resources available for women in Oregon struggling with substance abuse. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is committed to improving prevention, treatment, and recovery support services for mental and substance use disorders[7]. Oregon also has various treatment options, including outpatient and inpatient programs, as well as support groups and counseling services. It’s essential to raise awareness of these resources and work towards reducing the stigma associated with seeking help for substance abuse. By addressing the underlying causes of substance abuse and improving access to treatment, we can help improve the health and well-being of women in Oregon.
