Wyoming Women’s Drug & Alcohol Abuse Statistics
Substance abuse among women in Wyoming is a significant issue that requires attention. While specific data on women’s substance abuse in Wyoming is limited, national surveys provide some insight into the prevalence of substance abuse among women in the United States. The combined 2009 and 2010 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) estimated that 5.7 million women aged 18 or older had used illicit drugs in the past year[1]. These figures highlight the need for increased awareness and resources to address substance abuse among women in Wyoming.
The commonly abused substances among women in Wyoming are similar to those reported nationally. According to the 2018 NSDUH, the most commonly used substances among women aged 18 or older in the United States were alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs[2]. Prescription opioids alone or in combination with illicit drugs have been associated with the majority of drug overdose deaths in Wyoming[3]. Excessive drinking is also a concern, with 16.9% of females aged 18-44 reporting binge drinking or heavy alcohol use in the past 30 days[4].
These statistics highlight the need for targeted prevention and intervention efforts to address the specific substances being abused by women in Wyoming.
Substance abuse can have a significant impact on women’s health and well-being in Wyoming. Substance abuse during pregnancy can lead to a range of negative outcomes for both the mother and child, including preterm birth, low birth weight, and developmental delays[5]. Substance abuse can also increase the risk of mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, and exacerbate existing health conditions[1]. Additionally, substance abuse can have social and economic consequences, such as job loss, financial instability, and strained relationships. The combined 2009 and 2010 NSDUH estimated that 4.9 million women aged 18 or older had experienced a substance use disorder in the past year[6]. These figures underscore the need for comprehensive and accessible substance abuse treatment and support services for women in Wyoming.
