Furthermore, a recent analysis of data looking at mental health and substance use disorder across states found that Washington state had a higher rate of past-year substance use disorder among women compared to the national average[3]. The impact of substance abuse on women’s health and well-being is significant. Lifetime rates of mood and anxiety disorders are significantly higher among women than men, with and without substance-use disorders[1]. Substance abuse can also lead to a range of physical health issues, including liver disease, heart disease, and respiratory problems[2]. Moreover, the annual number of opioid drug overdose deaths in Washington state has nearly doubled since 2019, with evidence suggesting widespread opioid misuse[43 While women use alcohol and illicit drugs at lower rates than men, the health impact of their use is significant and, in some cases, greater[4]. It is crucial to provide women with access to comprehensive substance abuse treatment and support services to address these issues and improve their overall health and well-being.
