Oklahoma Women’s Drug & Alcohol Abuse Statistics
Substance abuse among women in Oklahoma is a significant issue, with statistics indicating a high prevalence of drug and alcohol misuse[1]. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) 2018 report, Oklahoma ranked among the top ten states for rates of substance use disorders among women ages 18-25[2]. This highlights the urgent need for effective prevention and treatment interventions to address this public health concern.
Methamphetamine is also a significant problem, being involved in three out of five drug overdose deaths in the state in 2022[3]. The NSDUH provides comprehensive data on substance use and mental illness at the national, state, and substate levels[4]. The 2021 NSDUH report includes selected estimates by race, ethnicity, and age, providing a detailed picture of substance use trends among women in Oklahoma[5].
Substance abuse can have a significant impact on women’s health and well-being, with studies indicating higher rates of comorbid medical and psychiatric disorders among women who misuse drugs or alcohol[6]. The lack of health insurance coverage is also a significant barrier to accessing treatment for substance abuse among Oklahoma women[7]. Additionally, it is estimated that up to two-thirds of women in treatment for substance abuse may have a co-occurring undiagnosed mental illness, highlighting the need for integrated treatment approaches[8]. Overall, addressing substance abuse among women in Oklahoma requires a multifaceted approach that addresses both the individual and systemic factors contributing to this issue.

Oklahoma Government Children and Youth Services
Oklahoma Government Children and Youth Services. The Children, Youth and Family Services team operates to assist Oklahomans with finding resources to assist with substance abuse services for children and adolescents. In an effort to impact the high rates of untreated mental health and substance abuse and the resulting negative consequences, the CYF team focuses on early intervention and prevention targeting Oklahoma youth. Emotional disturbances and substance abuse among children occur at alarming rates. About 10% of Oklahoma youth have a mental health disorder and an additional 10% have a substance abuse issue. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, children are best served by early intervention. Recent assessments find that more than 40% of the youth who need mental health services and 80% of youth who need substance abuse services are not receiving them. Without early and effective identification and interventions, childhood disorders can persist and lead to school failure, poor employment opportunities, poverty and incarceration in adulthood.
