Women’s Drug & Alcohol Abuse Statistics
Substance abuse among women in the United States remains a significant public health concern. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), in 2019, approximately 16.4% of women aged 18 and older reported binge drinking (consuming four or more drinks on a single occasion) in the past month. Additionally, 5.7% reported heavy alcohol use (binge drinking on five or more days in the past month).
Regarding illicit drug use, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reported that in 2019, about 10.4% of women aged 18 and older used illicit drugs in the past month.
Furthermore, SAMHSA’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) found that about 8.7% of women aged 18 to 25 and 5.2% of women aged 26 and older reported past-month marijuana use in 2019.
The prevalence of prescription drug misuse among women is also a concern. NIDA notes that women are more likely than men to be prescribed prescription opioids, potentially putting them at higher risk for misuse and addiction. According to SAMHSA, in 2019, approximately 4.8% of women aged 18 to 25 and 2.3% of women aged 26 and older misused prescription pain relievers in the past year.
